Founded by former California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. Wilson Riles, the Wilson Riles Archives and Institute for Education (WRAIE), exists to provide historical information about California K-12 public education. Maintaining a triune approach to meeting educational information needs, WRAIE offers the public an archival collection available for research, a traveling exhibit for display, and an information and referral service.

WRAIE's archival collection includes documents, photographs, audio and video tape, slides, artifacts and ephemera, and focuses mainly on California educational policy. Comprised of the records of state policymakers, legislators, activists, and district personnel, the collection offers researchers glimpses into educational policy from a variety of angles.

"From Stable to Schoolhouse: 19th Century Foundations of California Education," WRAIE's traveling exhibit of reproductions, interprets the genesis of public education in the Golden State. With panels on California's earliest public schools and teachers, education for minority children, kindergartens, and teacher training, "From Stable to Schoolhouse" displays the seeds from which our current educational system grew.

WRAIE also maintains an information and referral service for individuals seeking information on other archival collections pertaining to California public education. Comprised of personal service and links to other education web sites, researchers are welcome to submit queries regarding the location of records.
